Museo per la Memoria di Ustica was opened on June 27th, 2007, on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the tragic crash of the plane Itavia 870 Bologna-Palermo.
The Museo is part of the Istituzione Bologna Musei along with the MAMbo and Villa delle Rose.
Museo per la Memoria di Ustica holds the wreck of the passenger aircraft, surrounded by a permanent installation by the contemporary artist Christian Boltanski, made of 81 lights and 81 mirrors, in memory of the victims. There are also nine big boxes containing some of the personal belongings of the people onboard, as well as loudspeakers emitting whispered words, to express the sense of inevitability of the tragedy.
