Il Luogo

La Biennale di Venezia was established in the Giardini in 1895, on occasion of the first International Art Exhibition, in its 57th edition as of 2017. From 1907 onwards, foreign pavilions were added to the Central Pavilion. Today, the foreign pavilions are 29, some of which are designed by famous contemporary architects.
La Biennale di Venezia has always been actively engaged in the promotion of the avant-gardes and of the new trends in contemporary art and, since 1980, of architecture as well. The International Art Exhibition and the International Architecture Exhibition are held every other year. Over the years the multidisciplinarity of the Biennale has increased to include also cinema, music, theater and dance.
