The 14th-century Certosa di San Lorenzo in Padula, founded by the will of Tommaso Sanseverino, count of Marsico, is the largest monastic complex in Southern Italy. It has been included on UNESCO’s world heritage list since 1998.
In some of its evocative monastic cells, the Certosa di San Lorenzo accommodates its collection of contemporary art, expanded during the three-year period from 2002 to 2004, thanks to the three editions of the international event Le Opere e i Giorni, created and curated by Achille Bonito Oliva. This event saw the participation of famous international artists and included works inspired by the following themes: the Verb, the Rule and the Vanitas.
