The Venue
Organized by Giovanni Carandente in the frame of Festival dei Due Mondi, Sculture nella città was the first European event to integrate contemporary art, urban space and historical and artistic heritage, in the attempt to create an open-air museum in the center of the historic town of Spoleto. Fifty-three invited artists exhibited more than a hundred works in a diffused exhibition involving the whole city.
The show focused on sculpture as non-commemorative medium, capable of interacting in a contemporary manner with spaces and places of identity. The exhibition fostered the support of Italian industry in the production of site specific sculptures. Some of the works were later acquired by international and Italian museums, as well as by the Municipal Museum, recently named after the curator Giovanni Carandente. Six works are still installed in its original location, and are offered on permanent display.
