The Venue
Sala 1 is a space dedicated to experimental research on contemporary art, architecture, performances and music founded in 1970 by the sculptor Tito Amodei.
It is housed in the evocative exhibition venue inside the Pontifical Sanctuary of the Holy Stairs in Rome, next to the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran. Since the beginning of its activity, this Venue has shown interest in up-and-coming artists who later became famous, for instance Rodney Graham, El Anatsui, Steve McQueen, William Kentridge, Tatsumi Orimoto, and Tadashi Kawamata.
Sala 1 is particularly focused on the creation of art projects and exhibitions involving young art historians and guest curators, with a view to promoting the spread of the most innovative trends of the international art scene.
