The Venue
Maria Lai‘s relationship with Ulassai, her place of origin and affection, is marked by a series of permanent works for public space that the artist initiated in 1981. After the seminal collaborative work Legarsi alla montagna, which involved the community in a performative installation, the artist has created several sculptures, installations and wall drawings that have transformed the small Sardinian town into an open-air museum. This art itinerary also includes works of other Italian authors invited by Lai and stretches from the city center to its surroundings, passing through Stazione dell’arte, a contemporary art museum founded by the artist in 2006. The works of Maria Lai are in dialogue with the territory, bringing attention to stories, rituals and knowledges rooted in local heritage and culture that constitutes part of her inspiration.
