Metro Art – Le Stazioni dell’Arte – Linea 1

Artworks in public spaces

The Venue

Inaugurated in 2001, Metro Art Napoli – Le Stazioni dell’Arte, is a project of redevelopment of large areas of the city, promoted by the municipal administration, that interpreted underground stations as potential sites for contemporary art. Under the artistic direction of Achille Bonito Oliva, the stations of Line 1 and Line 6 of the Naples underground have been renewed by Italian and international architects and designers such as Àlvaro Siza, Oscar Tusquets and Alessandro Mendini and enriched by more than two hundred works by internationally renowned artists. Metro Art Napoli is a real widespread museum open to the public as large as the urban area; it was conceived to improve the aspect of both the stations and the surrounding spaces, and to interact with different contexts and neighborhoods. The site-specific interventions dialogue with the specificities of each space, alternating different languages such as sculpture, wall painting, installation, mosaic, and photography.
