The Venue
Giustino Fortunato, to whom the square is dedicated, was an Italian politician and historian and one of the most important representatives of Meridionalism. He was among the first signatories of the of the Manifesto degli intellettuali antifascisti . In 1925 some Italian intellectuals, published such a document in defense of democracy. The artist replaced, at regular intervals, some elements of the floor of the square of with crystal plates engraved with the name of the signatories of the manifesto. At the base of each element a mirror multiplies the names and seems to project it beyond time and space. Mirror, light and color are typically employed by artist to allude to another dimension and to activate in the viewer a different perception of reality. The project was curated by Efisio Pizzalis.
