The Venue
Carboniera was conceived in occasion of Jannis Kounellis‘ exhibition at Teatro Margherita in Bari in 2010, curated by Annamaria Maggi and Vito Labarile, in collaboration with the association Di Segno in Segno.
The work was presented outside the theatre that was damaged by the fire of 1911 and in dialogue with the stage and with the cavea,
The sculpture is a remake of the series of the Carboniere, realised by the Arte Povera master in different versions since 1967. The structure consists of a rectangular iron case containing coal. Donated by the artist to the city to be exhibited in a public area, it was initially installed in Piazza del Ferrarese, and moved to its current location, at Cittadella Cultura, seat State Archive and Library in 2015.
