The Venue
The American Academy in Rome was founded in 1893, during the Chicago World’s Fair, when a group of architects decided to create a centre for studying art in the heart of classical culture.
The American Academy awards the Rome Prize every year to thirty contemporary artists and scholars, hosted in the Venue, on the Janiculum. This is to let them work in direct contact with Roman culture. Besides residencies, the Academy organizes conferences, concerts and open exhibitions of international importance.
