The Venue
The Lavatoio (wash house) is part of the itinerary of the diffused museum of Ulassai. The building was formerly used for washing wool and wheat, is also the main fountain of the village. Abandoned in the seventies, it was restored and transformed into a “deposit of artistic energy” in 1982, by initiative of Maria Lai with the contribution of Luigi Veronesi, Costantino Nivola, and Guido Strazza. The artists produced site specific works responding to the material and immaterial characteristics of the place, using the entire space – ceiling, walls, external areas – and reflecting on its qualities, as the sound and reflections of the water, the resonance of the women’s songs, and updated them through visual and sound installations that animate the environment and bring back common memories and imageries otherwise destined to disappear.
