The Venue
The sculpture was donated by Fernando Botero to the Municipality of Florence three years after its realization. Commonly referred to as The Bird, the work has monumental dimensions and is characterized by the expanded volumes typically adopted by the Colombian artist. The artist uses the deformation of bodies as a metaphor of the transformation of reality through art. Paloma is a symbol of flight, in relation to its location outside the airport Amerigo Vespucci. The work exists in smaller scale in different versions, the most representative of which is on display at the Museo Nacional de Colombia.
