The Venue
Since 2013 Apulian artist Daniela Corbascio has been installing neon arrow shaped signs indicating South in different places of the city of Bari: Castello Svevo (removed), Banca BNL Paribas (removed), Teatro Margherita / Circolo della Vela, Palazzo della Presidenza della Regione Puglia, Bari International Airport and Museo Fondazione Pino Pascali in Polignano a Mare. The work is based on the repetition, of the same sign, that in relation to the each place, selected by the artist according to the different functional and symbolic functions for the city, takes different meanings. The size and height of the work vary depending on the space in which it is located, changing in the perception by the observer. The decontextualized indication “South” is enigmatic, and rather than spatial, it suggests an emotional direction, evocative for the viewer of a personal interpretation and of a sense of belonging.
