The Venue
Mu 765 G is one of the versions of the drop, a form that Japanese-born artist Kenjiro Azuma explored between the 1980s and 2000s. Following his retrospective exhibition organized in 2010 by Zètema in collaboration with the Soprintendenza, the work was acquired by Regione Basilicata and donated to the city of Matera. The bronze sculpture has since been placed in the city center in front of Museo di Arte Medievale e Moderna della Basilicata, Palazzo Lanfranchi. The artist’s minimalist approach, that comes from Zen philosophy, was also a consequence of the teaching of sculptor Marino Marini, Azuma’s master and friend.
The contrast between the heavy and static material and the reference to a fluid element like water is evocative of the relationship of the city with the surrounding landscape modelled by erosion phenomena.
