The Venue

The monument, donated by Giacomo Manzù to the city in 1977, is located in the garden behind the Porta Nuova in the center of the Lower City. In 1974 the artist received an award from his hometown: as sign of his gratitude he donated to the city a monument in memory of his parents and all the heroes of the Resistenza. The work consists of a large bronze parallelepiped: on the front side a young man is hanging upside down and a woman – his wife or mother – stands beside him stretching an arm in piety; the other side carries a text written by the artist (“Partisan I saw you hanging motionless. Only the hair moved slightly on your forehead. It was the evening air that subtly crept into the silence and caressed you, as I wanted to do – Giacomo Manzù, 25 April 1977”).
