The Venue
Stolpersteine (Stumbling stones) is an on-going project by Gunter Demnig that started in Germany in 1993 and continued in several European cities, curated by Gunter Demnig Stiftung. The work consists of the insertion of a brass plated stone element in the pavement in front of the house of victims of Nazism. The name, date of birth, place and date of deportation of the commemorated person are engraved on its surface. In their anti-monumental and diffuse form, the Stolpersteine become part of the urban landscape and are experiences by its community. In Italy the project was presented for the first time in Rome in 2010. Every citizen or institution can become a commissioner by requesting its installation. Since 2010, the project has been implemented in ninety-six Italian cities, in the regions of Abruzzo, Emilia Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Piedmont, Puglia, Sicily, Tuscany, Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto .
