The Venue
Arnold Holzknecht’s and Michele Bernardi’s intervention on Hans Piffrader’s bas-relief for the former Casa Littoria in Bolzano, which today hosts the city’s Financial Office, was selected following a competition launched by the provincial government in order to re-contextualize monuments and memorials realized during the Fascist period.
The work overwrites the bas-relief dedicated to the history of Fascism and his leader Mussolini, superimposing on it the sentence “Nobody has the right to obey”, freely adapted from a text by the philosopher Hannah Arendt. The sentence is an invitation to act according to one’s conscience, when faced with orders when they are unjust.
